Surgical gowns are considered one of the most important protective items during surgical procedures. They play an essential role in maintaining sterile conditions by blocking the transfer of harmful microorganisms and chemicals to and from the patient, and reducing the transfer of bacteria from the skin of the surgical staff to the air in the operating room.
Due to the controlled nature of surgical procedures, critical zones of protection have been described by international industry standards used to test and measure the barrier performance for liquids and blood-borne pathogens. AAMI level 4 is the highest level protection for surgical gowns. To be qualified as AAMI level 4, the surgical gown must have the highest level of protection in 4 critical zones: front chest, sleeve seam, sleeve, and front belt attachment point.
Ahlstrom-Munksjö has a wide range of products for all levels of protection. We have a high performing Breathable Viral Barrier (BVB) product portfolio that leverages our decades of experience making medical fabrics that are impervious and breathable.
Ahlstrom-Munksjö’s monolithic film uses a chemical process to achieve breathability which means it allows moisture vapor to pass through so the surgical staff stays cool and dry. Our next generation BVB, ViroSēl™, has a specially formulated design that provides the opportunity to create a robust seam seal for the highly critical areas in a surgical gown. Our technology provides additional protection against liquids and viruses that cause infectious diseases ensuring the safety of the surgical staff and patients. It can be used in construction AAMI Level 4 gown.
