Keeping people safe with our expanded offering of protective face mask materials

Our solutions are designed to protect health care workers, patients and people worldwide.

The spread of the COVID-19 virus around the world has caused increased demand for protective medical equipment in the healthcare industry and in non-sanitary use by professionals in contact with the public. In response to these circumstances Ahlstrom-Munksjö increased nonwoven production across its entire protective materials portfolio.  Manufacturing has expanded on production lines normally used for making other fiber-based materials.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö has expanded its offering of protective materials for all three face mask categories: Civil masks, Surgical masks and Respiratory masks. These materials are protective, comfortable and meet the highest performance requirements.

Ahlstrom-Munksjö has in-depth knowledge in a wide range of fiber-based solutions and is among the leading suppliers of medical materials globally. For decades the company has been developing nonwoven materials that are used to construct  protective medical fabrics such as surgical gowns and drapes, pleated surgical face masks, protective apparel and sterile barrier systems.

Pleated face masks are typically produced with three layers of nonwoven materials: an inner comfort layer, a middle filtration layer and an outer protection layer.  For several years, Ahlstrom-Munksjö has been producing the inner and outer coverstock used for surgical face masks. However, the middle filter media was something Ahlstrom-Munksjö did not produce until recently. Ahlstrom-Munksjö's filtration business has a long experience in the production of high performance filter media for various industrial and transportation end uses. Due to expanded production, Ahlstrom-Munksjö now offers customers a full range of technologies and has the ability to produce all layers of a face mask for all three categories (Civil, Surgical and Respiratory).
