Ahlstrom-Munksjö is in the process of creating a systematic approach to environmental performance in R&D using various ecodesign and environmental tools. The Ahlstrom-Munksjö approach utilises four principle areas to evaluate and improve products’ environmental performance:
- Low-impact materials: Bio-based, recycled, recyclable, biodegradable, and low energy materials all contribute to a more sustainable product from procurement to end-of-life. Some examples of such products are Ahlstrom Bioweb®, Cristal Evolution envelope windows, and the vegetable parchment range.
- Chemical usage: Ahlstrom-Munksjö works according to the principles of ‘green chemistry’, which means reducing or eliminating hazardous chemicals from its products. For example, most products reduce or eliminate formaldehyde and chemicals based on hazardous perfluoro-octanoic acid (PFOA). Chemical usage also involves the reduction of non-hazardous chemicals, such as silicone. Chemical reduction has a direct effect on the use of other raw materials and energy. Some examples of such products are the Acti-V XB release liner and formaldehyde-free product lines.
- Process efficiency: Lean processes with the efficient use of raw materials, energy and water contribute to reduced costs and reduced environmental impacts. Efficiencies in one area of the process often lead to efficiencies in other areas as with e.g. Gerbier HDS 35 g/m² Aderpack lightweight.
- Product efficiency: Through high quality and performance, products work efficiently in customer applications. Ahlstrom-Munksjö creates innovative solutions for product performance and end-of-life disposal that enable its customers to have a more sustainable product life cycle. Some examples of such products are Bioweb, NatureMold, filtration products and biodegradable silicone release liners.
